Swampmaster

CSS didn't invent the short bow; they made the short bow better.

The Swampmaster has a very 'sweet' shot and is surprisingly forgiving and stable for such a short bow.

CSS Archery, still a relatively new company and makers of top quality high performance bows, has built a 'master' piece — the Swampmaster.

After shooting an older and longer ATA version of the Swampmaster since early 2000, I decided to give the short 32-inch Swampmaster a test drive.

Encountering some disappointing experiences with other short bows of different manufacturers, I had high hopes that the same great qualities found in my other CSS bow would exist with this bow.  I am happy to report that not only do the same great qualities (such as accuracy, speed, quietness, shootability and durability) exist, they are better than ever!  I am now convinced after talking with several CSS bow owners and considering my own experiences that building great bows time after time is routine for CSS.

The precision machined three inch idler is the key component to the bow's needle threading accuracy.

Checking over every inch of the bow axle to axle, which isn't many, I found the craftsmanship to be of top quality and the feel to be very solid.

Wood grips have always been my favorite, but I was surprisingly satisfied with the soft odor-free rubber grip (one piece wood grip is optional). The reflex T-6061 precision-machined aluminum riser has a sharp sturdy look and is light weight.

Housed within the  limb pockets is a pair of well-respected Gordon Thermal Composite limbs.  Married by high strength axle pins to the limbs are a well-constructed machine aluminum idler wheel at the top and a very smooth-drawing machined aluminum perimeter cam powerhouse (P1) at the bottom. The cam is feature-packed by a modular draw length system and adjustable patent pending Pro Stop for micro-draw length changes.

Keeping the idler and cam in harmony is a unique combination of a BCY Dynaflight-97 cable and BCY 450-Plus string. A great bow deserves a respected camo pattern.  I found a popular coating of Mossy Oak.

After rigging out the bow with all the bells and whistles, I started shooting at 10 yards. It took me a while to sight in the bow due to the fact that I kept shooting over and over without adjustments just to listen to the bow.

To date, the Swampmaster is the quietest bow I have ever shot, period. I ended up taking the string silencers off because the bow just doesn't need them. I used a set of limb savers and a basic stabilizer. After pinching myself to make sure that this wasn't a dream, I managed to sight-in the bow in no time.

Most bow companies have switched to an integrated cable guard.  CSS' vision is to make bows as adjustable as possible.

I found the draw cycle to be very smooth without a radical break-over. The wall is very solid due to the Pro Stop and can be adjusted to fit the shooter's needs.

My shooting style felt right at home with a very sweet shootable valley. The release is very crisp and clean due to the all but non-existent hand-shock. For a shooter to say this bow has hand-shock, he would need the ability to detect shock in micro units.

I would suggest the Swampmaster to hunters of all levels that demand the highest combination of accuracy, quietness, and speed in a short ATA hunting bow. Whether you're hunting whitetail in thick-n-heavy brush or hunting wild boar in mesquite and cactuses or stalking trophy elk in the Colorado hills, you will be happy that you are carrying the short, lightweight and dependable Swampmaster.
