Popular Hurricane gets
facelift
TRU-Fire expands line, offers H.O.T and rope systems
Last year I wrote about the TRU-Fire Hurricane with Power Strap
and if you happened to read the article, you will recall that I spoke very
highly of this release.
My feelings about this release have not degraded. If the release were
human, it would nearly have best-friend status.
The Hurricane has been and continues to be a very popular release among
bow hunters. Recognizing the demand, TRU-Fire has added two new models of
Hurricane to make the line even more diverse.
Hurricane
H.O.T.
This release features a "Fall Away" design that can be used in a
horizontal (firing poisition) or an oscillating (fall away position), or it can be locked down into a
tucked position for climbing into your tree stand or pulling arrows. This is all done by a simple 1/2 turn of the knurled locking dial located at the base of the strap. This system makes these releases the most versatile fall away releases available.
Features
The Hurricane has a release that will make you cry the first time you
shoot it in the sense of wondering why you ever wasted your time with
other caliper-style releases. I have never shot a smoother release,
period.
The TRU-Fire uses an ounce tester (a force measuring device) in combination with a pneumatic
bow simulator during product R & D to see how much force is required
to trigger a release. Simulated draw weights are 15 - 150 pounds. At
70 pounds, the Hurricane requires only 3.5 ounces of force to trigger a
release. TRU-Fire's closet competitor's release requires over 6 ounces.
This type of test is called "loading up" of a trigger.
While the low amount of required force to trigger a release is
impressive, I found the feel of the trigger movement itself was even more
impressive. The silky smooth movement just makes me want to squeeze it
instead of the normal bad habit of punching the trigger.
The smoothness of the release is credited to a free-floating, self
centering steel roller that rolls along the inside of the jaws instead of
sliding over them.
Another impressive feature of the Hurricane is the way you can adjust
the length between the head of the release and the wrist strap. TRU-Fire's
competitor's releases are adjusted by set-screw and only allow for a
hand-full of preset positions. This can cause you not to get the exact
length that you may require. The Hurricane, on the other side of the coin,
functions much different in the way the length is adjusted.
Over 1.5 inches of length adjustment can be made by simply turning the
release's head in a clockwise or counter clockwise direction. With each
full turn, the head will lengthen (or shorten) 1/32 of an inch. This
gives you over 48 different lengths to choose from shouldn't have
any problem finding a point that fits your preference.
When you see a Hurricane release, you will probably notice that it
really doesn't look any different than any other caliper-style release. I
have already noted several things about the Hurricane that differ and why
they are better when compared to other releases. The list doesn't stop
here there's more.
How many times have you strapped on a new release and liked the way it
felt on your hand? I'm sure there were some that you liked and some that
you didn't. How many times have you wished that the strap was
designed different to make it easier to put on and take off? This is where
the list grows longer.
The Hurricane's Power Strap is not only comfortable, it is also very
easy to put on your hand. The Power Strap requires only one other body
part (your free hand) to get it snug on your trigger hand. This is
because the strap is one long piece that creates a loop, TRU-Fire calls it
the "Continuous Loop." All you have to do is insert your
trigger hand through the loop, and with your other hand pull the strap
tight and Velcro it back over. Your done!
Other releases, with the popular V-style strap, that I have used in the
past pretty much require you to hold down one side of the strap by pushing
on it with your ribs or chest while your free hand folds over the other
side. Then you still must take the Velcro strap and insert it into the
buckle, pull it tight and strap it down. You almost need an extra
hand to get it right. This type of wrist strap causes inconsistent
wrist-strap placement on your wrist and the tightness is never the same.
If it feels different, from time to time, you will probably shoot
different since you anchor will be different.

Summary
In recent years, I have been shooting one of TRU-Fire's
main competitor's releases that is very similar. While the other release
looks very much the same, the way it functions is very much different. I
have sat the two release side by side trying to compare them, and it
simply cannot be done. The Hurricane is by far, more superior in so
many areas.
Remember, it looks the same but works much
different. Goes along with the old saying, "Don't judge a book by its
cover."
